Psychotherapy & Counselling in Billericay and Chelmsford

What to expect when visiting a psychotherapist:

How do we get started?

If you feel that you could benefit from the opportunity to talk in confidence about your current situation, you can email or call me to set up an initial consultation. In this one-off appointment you’ll be able to explore how psychotherapy could help you before deciding to go further.

What happens in the first session?

There are no expectations, you can be as prepared or unprepared as you’d like for your first session. You may need to get a lot off your chest and do a lot of talking, or you may have a lot of questions about therapy, or about what’s going on in your head and body in relation to your difficulties.
At the end of the session we will discuss how we might work together and consider your hopes and expectations for our work. Should you decide to continue, we will decide on a regular session time going forward with a review after 6 to 8 sessions.

How long shall I have sessions for?

Everyone is different. The number of sessions you have will depend on what you bring and what you want from the work we do. Some people who want to deal with a specific issue that is troubling them might stay for up to 8 sessions, others may want to make significant changes in their lives which can take several years. Either way, our work will be a collaborative process so we will review your needs and goals regularly to keep the work on track.

How long are the sessions? And How often do I need to come?

All sessions are 50 minutes long. Sessions are weekly and usually at the same time. Sometimes people might choose to come more often if they need more support.

How it works

You will be given the space to talk about whatever feels most important or troubling – this may be the events of the week, a difficult relationship, dreams, or troubling thoughts, feelings or behaviours. Listening carefully to what the client says the therapist works to help the client bring their true feelings to the surface, so that they can experience them and understand them.
This is a process that can lead to a deeper understanding of yourself, and more assured, authentic relationships with others. It is not an instant fix, but it can result in profound change.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. If you choose to contact a private counsellor/therapist, your GP doesn't need to refer you. Its up to you whether you let them know.

Can I really talk about anything?

Absolutely you can. Our sessions are confidential so you can talk about whatever is troubling you.
